How to take 200 books on a trip with you

July 12th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Welcome back!

Recently I took a trip to Phoenix.  Along with me I took a Course Kit for CUWN, my IPExpert CCIE Security Lab book as well as Proctor Guide, 2 Cisco Press books and my InternetworkExpert CCIE Security Volume 2 lab guide.  I had to take an extra suitcase to carry it all.  It was such a hassle checking in my bags and waiting for them at baggage claim, but even more so it sucked lugging that stuff everywhere.  I have some of the stuff in PDF form on my laptop, and on the flight I used the PDF for a while.  But Batteries dont last forever on a laptop and it took all the room on that little tray that folds down on the airplane.

Enter the Amazon Kindle.

When I was in Orlando at Cisco Live, the guys at Cisco Press were demonstrating the Kindle in the Certification Lounge.  I didn’t get to check it out for long but it is SWEET.  It’s 10 ounces and can store about 200 books.  Has a slot to add memory, wi-fi so you dont have to plug it in to download your books and can last a week without a charge.  The Kindle version of the books are less than the hard back.  It saves your place, is really easy to use and well, its just cool.

I cant say enough about it!  I think its also cool that you can get newspapers, blogs and more on it.  I myself am going to see about getting my blog into kindle format so it can be taken with you.

Anyhow, if you check it out please let me know what you think.  I’m interested to see what others have to say.

I use the Cybook Gen3 from Bookeen for just that. I have read around 4-5 cisco press books and find it invaluable for reading on the commute and on the go. I have probably 20-25 books on there, but you can load it up.

I purchased the cybook because of http://www.mobipocket.com, that is the content/conversion engine. I can load up any pdf, chm or word document and then read it at my leisure.

bonus: instead of looking like a complete dork carrying a 900 page book, you are just carrying a notepad!!

Let me know if you get the kindle, love to see how it compares!

    Thanks,
    Mark
